Miami for me, maybe because the History of Spain and Florida, or because both are beach destinations, nature, tourism etc... but Chicago is well known too.

Miami! Miami has also almost passed Chicago's skyline even.

But the truth is that the American cities have no leverage in the world despite their size. If I meet a Frenchman and start the discussion saying "what do you think about Miami", the other one replies "dunno, couldn't care less".

It might come as a surprise to some Americans, but for most Europeans, not to mention Asians, not a single city except NYC has any leverage in peoples' minds. Cities like Miami might as well be as unknown as the rural village up north. And asking even a European, the typical reply is 'never been to Chicago and don't intend to, know nothing about the place'.

Quite of sad, actually. Like some Chicagoers think their metropolis is a vibrant and interesting hub for everything, but 99% of the world's population can't even place it on the map. And those who do, couldn't care less.

Posts like this are exactly why I started my thread about America being the most beautiful country in the world. So much trashing of America on the world forum it is pathetic and it isn't in the slightest necessary. No American cares what you or anyone else in the world thinks of our cities. Want to know the undeniable truth though! Our cities ARE more important than the cities in any other country on this earth.

What people are you talking to?
Most Europeans around me do know about New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Chicago, Memphis, Dallas, New Orleans, Orlando, Houston, Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle, Denver, Atlanta, Honolulu and many even know San Diego, Detroit, Nashville, Austin, San Antonio, Cleveland, Portland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, Kansas City and Tampa.

Hollywood is throwing American cities in our face, how can we not know anything about these cities?

Now if you were saying Fresno, Boise, Tucson, Albuquerque, Tulsa, Lincoln, Omaha, Wichita, Des Moines, Louisville, Cincinnati, Grand Rapids, Little Rock, Jackson, Montgomery, Greensboro, Raleigh, Norfolk, Richmond, Rochester, Albany, New Haven and Hartford yeah most people outside North America don't know anything about these cities.

I'd say San Francisco and LA do.

Sensitive much? What he was saying was not trashing the USA. Stating that a certain city is irrelevant is not necessarily saying that it sucks, it just has no meaning to them. Hell, those of us on the west coast don't ever think about Chicago either, Miami a little bit.

Besides, even when the US does get bashed (and it does), it's not alone. The UK and Mexico get their fare share and you don't see them whining like 3 year olds.

That's not true. Cities like Miami, New Orleans and Las Vegas are punching way above their weight when it comes to being known around the world.
