I know that in North America (US and Canada), people drive mostly using automatic transmission in cars and in Europe, mostly manual transmission. In which other countries or world regions is automatic as common as North America?
After having read a Wikipedia article on automatic transmission, Australia and some Asian markets - at least since the 1990s - come to mind. So I have a couple of questions there:
1) Did Australia adopt automatic later than the US or Canada, despite also being a New World anglophone country with continental dimensions, because Australia has copied British patterns more - e.g. traffic lights and side of the road to drive on, as well as the tendency in Britain (as in much of Europe) to drive manual?
2) Which Asian countries adopted automatic on a wide scale in the 1990s?
Israel is uses mainly manual transmission cars. In Israel if one takes a driving/road test on an automatic transmission car (and passes the test), then they receive a driver's license that is says it is only good for automatic transmission cars.

same here , restricted licence if you do test in an auto
at least 90% of cars in Ireland are manual , we have a truly neurotic attitude to automatics in this country
I drive an auto and love it
I'm the exception to most Americans. I drive a manual, but I learned to drive in an automatic. I prefer manual because autos have a bad habit of being high maintenance and have costly repairs and I don't have the money to pour into another maintenance item. I'll get an auto car in the future probably, but only if it's a Japanese car. I don't trust autos in any other make

Same here, except I'm Canadian. I love driving standard. There is just so much more control, and I don't have to wait until some snotty computer decides what gear to be in for a certain situation.
It also forces you to pay attention, and not wander off into la-la land in traffic. You should be planning even further ahead with standard.
That, and I think automatic Jeeps are sacralige unless you're rock crawling.

Is there a disappointed, slowly shaking head in a disapproving way smilie? lol
Wait.....what kind of Jeep? Is it a 4dr JK? If it's newer I understand. They almost all come like that.
Mine is 22years old, and I find it unacceptable for them to be autos lol
