The old adage applies, be alert of your surroundings and practise common sense like not flaunting expensive stuff, etc but don't you sometimes feel thrown off by contradictory advice given by different people when you enquire about the security of a city? They range from "Oh, the media's playing it up. You'll be just fine." to "This is no place for a tourist."
So, what do you make of the security in your city at night?
Voted for "I walk without a care in the world (genuinely)". Two exceptions, though:
Schwedenplatz and certain parts of the "Stadtbahnbögen" on Friday and Saturday evenings, when I'm sober. It's not really dangerous, but there are just too many drunks around, since those are two rather big bar districts
I pick the third option. I walk around at night with my phone in my hand without worrying someone is going to take it, and if somebody did, I would chase after them for miles and kick them in the testicles when I finally reach them (or elbow their boobs if it's a woman).

There must be a dearth of female criminals in England...
Depends largely upon the area i am in, it would be either option 2 or option 3. I chose option 3 as I never really have any reasons to go to the outer suburban areas where gang activity is more or a problem.
Despite the bad reps some pub/club districts get in oz, I have never really felt unsafe in any of the them.
I consider my city is safe - at night city it is patroled by police. The drunk companies can represent some threat but it is forbidden is in the street in a state of intoxication so they try to avoid conflicts that will not meet with police. Street robberies are very rare, the weapon is not applied never.
However there are exceptions, such as Kings Cross. You never know if a drunk crazy person is waiting behind a corner to punch you. I never have to fear robbery or theft though.
Melbourne - not as safe as maybe 20 years ago but by world standards would rank fairly high on safety, i use to work night shifts in the cbd when i was younger which required me to spend time in narrow dead laneways and never encountered a problem, of course you have to pay attention and look out for dodgy activity anywhere at night, but overall you dont really get a bad vibe or feel fear here.
I walk without a care in the world (genuinely), though I've been mugged once. But it's so rare, that the probabilities for that to happen again is minimal. There's no dangerous areas in my city, even the suburbs are rather safe nowadays, and I have no business there anyway.
