Hitler was not born in Austria. He was born in Austria-Hungary. Though he was born German. So that doesn't matter. After his rise to power, he imported Germans from all over Europe to freely move back to Germany. Despite being native-born or not. German was German.

Too bad the Jewish Weimar Republic does not have such a law! My parents are from Germany. I was born in the USA. I cannot even get a damned visa to Germany!

Dear god, that issue seems to be one of the few which are impossible to discuss in English. There is just a lack of English words that describe people who just speak German and people who are German citizens... Combine that with a lack of knowledge of German/Austrian/-Hungarian history and that results in a lack of understanding of that rather complicated issue.

Borders are a good point. But so far as I understand, being German was not very complicated back then. For instance, simply having a German surname was enough to make you a German citizen, if you requested it.

Even in the USA today, it is the same. I was born here, but have a German name. Everyone says to me "Oh! You are German!" And sadly, I proclaim "no I am not." They are confused. The residual concepts of nationality still exist today.

With a German surname you may have been part of the German-language group, but you certainly didn't have German citizenship. At least not as a Austro-Hungarian. More than enough people had a German surname, but only spoke Czech and a lot of Viennese had a Czech surname, but only spoke German.

Norway.

I do not think so. King Haakon was a Dane.
