In the U.S., it's (American) football, followed by baseball, followed by basketball, followed by hockey. Those are the four major pro sports.
In Minnesota, it seems like hockey is more popular than basketball, maybe even baseball. It also seems that high school hockey is more popular than pro hockey.
Soccer (known as "football" in most other places) might not be a very popular spectator sport, but it IS a popular participant sport among children. Almost every day during recess, at least in the warm season, we played soccer at the small parochial school I attended for two years. Soccer is a competitive sport of the first magnitude for elementary school and middle school students, though its popularity fades out in high school, as hockey and football take the fore.
