For those of you that are not Americans and haven't been to the USA, do you realize that there is a difference between NY and NYC? NY meaning the large state of New York vs. NYC meaning New York City which is located in the Southern part of NY State and is known worldwide. NYC is just one city in NY State and isn't even the capital of NY State.

Pretty sure all people on this forum know the difference.
Not the capital of NY but it is the capital of the world.

One thing that forumers might not know is that people who live in New York City tend to distance themselves from the rest of their state (except for trips and things like that). This is because upstate New York is socially, politically and economically very different from New York City.
In fact, New York City is much more connected with New Jersey and Connecticut than it is with upstate New York, which is much more rural. Of course, it is only people who live in the area who care about stuff like this.
Well, I live about 100 km from the border with New York State and about 700 km from the Big Apple. Up here if people say they are going to "New York" they mean they are going to the city. Obviously we know that the state exists as well.
Completely aware. I can't even imagine how someone wouldn't know that. At least here, where the most popular border crossing (apart from Sault St. Marie, Michigan/Ontario) is through Buffalo.

I think most people know this. Did you meet someone who didn't?
