Like suits and ties for men, globalization has spread "western" cultural norms for dress across the world. Women still seem a bit less constrained by homogenization of dress (having more traditional dress retained than men; for instance, African or Asian women might still wear colorful, traditional, patterned garments while their husbands may often dress more like Americans).

One thing I wonder though is, has high heeled shoe culture spread to most women around the world by now, at least in industrialized cultures? In most western cultures, heels for women are such a staple of the wardrobe taken for granted (look at any ad or stereotypical depiction of shoe shopping for women and a solid proportion of the fare depicted will feature heels like pumps, stilettos etc.).

Yet, are there cultures where women don't really wear heeled footwear? I could imagine some tribal/village cultures where only traditional shoes or sandals are worn, but are high heels now pretty much cosmopolitan in at least parts of most countries with exposure to westernization or industrialization?

It's not a trend in the Philippines. Girls only wear heels at night, during the day, girls usually wear flip flops... Very different from women in China who wear very high heels even when they look like they couldn't walk any more.

It's catching on more in Asia, you see a lot of girls wearing them going out at night in places like Singapore, even Vietnam, Thailand, China, Japan. Some working office jobs etc wear them, the more restrained form, but like here, I don't really see many wearing them like everyday casually like they might in Russia. In much of tropical Asia you see a lot of women wearing thongs (flip-flops) same with men. In Iran actually heels are pretty popular, under their burqas...in India it's tends to be the wealthier, more western ladies, many women still wear saris and traditional clothing.

I think Filipinas are quite different compare to most Asian women because they prefer to look more casual and relaxed while the other Asian women prefer to look more feminine and more polished. Philippines is one of the biggest supporters of Brasilian flipflops.Havaianas ( Brasil's flipflops ) is just so big in the Philippines.

Well in Southeast Asia I'd say they're less dressed up in general than say Korea, a lot of women don't really wear makeup.etc but more and more are now.

High heels are becoming less popular here amongst young women. You're probably more likely to see a young woman under 30 wearing converse shoes or something.

Well yeah here most don't wear it just to go shopping or walking with their friends, I also notice those shoes becoming more popular.
