Generally in Brisbane the further you get from the Business District the cheaper the housing becomes, $500,000 USD is about 700k AUD these days,

This one is 19km from the CBD, in an area below the cities median household income.

This one is about 6 km away in the area we live in

110 Harold Street Holland Park Qld 4121 - House for Sale #121466326 - realestate.com.au

Closer in there are a ton of new apartments for sale in that price range, these are 1 km from the business district.

96/260 Vulture Street South Brisbane Qld 4101 - Apartment for Sale #121472550 - realestate.com.au

Or you can buy a standalone property in need of a bit of love.

In Beijing (city proper), the price for apartments is about $10k per sq meters. So $500k can get a small-sized apartment with two bedrooms.
In outer suburbs, the price is about the half.

This is not accurate. The minimum wages in all provinces of China are above 1200 yuan per month in 2015 (actually only two provinces are below 1400), which is about $200 per month. And that is the minimum wage.

In China farmers can be very poor if they only farm. However blue-collar workers with a full time job typically make around $400 per month.

In regional NSW, Australia, $500,000USD or $700,000 AUD would buy you a pretty nice house. In a town like Wagga (agricultural service industries, small scale manufacturing, a university and air force base) even $550,00 AUD ($395,000USD) will get you a reasonable house:

13 Samson Avenue, Estella Real Estate For Sale | allhomes
