Harbor Springs, Michigan

4 Bed 4 Bath on 3 and a half acres for $430,000
Graham Real Estate - Harbor Springs Michigan Real Estate - Home Version 4.2

4beds 5 baths on a golfcourse fairway lot.
2063 Greenbriar, Harbor Springs Property Listing: MLS® #438358

Real estate prices dive bombed in 2008, they are slowly rising but for $500K there are some large homes out there. We paid $85K for a 2 bed 1300sq ft home on 2 acres last year, there are still properties to be had for very reasonable prices in the area.

By comparison my mothers home is up for sale in Oxford, UK right now. It is a 1940's semi-detached home with 3 bedrooms and 1 and half baths, the sale price is £265,000 ($438,000)

Despite its "pricey" reputation, California has a very wide range of housing prices, naturally depending on "location, location, location". For example aprox $500K will easily find you a house like the one on the left in my neck of the woods, inland here in the Sierra foothills (3 bdrm, 3 bath, 3,100 sq ft, on 2.5 acres with a pond).

While out on the coast, in say San Francisco, $500K will be lucky to buy you this 1 bdrm/1 bath condo pictured on the right!

More or less 1-2 bedrooms, kitchen, 1 bathroom, perhaps a yard, no more than 60 m².

^ ^ A lotta house, although on only two thirds of an acre, you'd better be on 'good terms' with your neighbors!

It depends where you live.

Here it would get you a 3000 square foot house with about six bedrooms.

That is pretty much the cost of an "average" house in Calgary (Dec. 2013 average house cost $527K Canadian)... but "average" will vary depending on the area of the city.

Desirable new neighborhood in the west side:
1500 sq ft house
4100 sq ft lot
3 bedroom/3 bath
$472k US Dollars

Downtown new construction high rise condo:
930 sq ft
2 bedroom/2 bath
$448k US Dollars

In the suburb of Alwoodley, $500k or around there can buy you a 2-4 bedroom semidetached house, or a 2 bedroom flat.

In Roundhay, much the same - semi-detached or a flat.

In the city centre, you can get a surprisingly large amount of space for your money. Yet renting remains ridiculously expensive.
