Interesting question. I don't usually follow that price range, so I took a look.
Bend, Oregon, which is a ski and outdoor recreation area.
For $500,000 US, you can get a newer upper middle class house on a very small lot. All I saw were 3 bedroom, 1865-3500 square feet and decent finishes, wood and granite. (in a quick scan of listings)
Or for $500,000 you can get 5-10 acres with a smaller plain house, but if you shop carefully, you might find one with a barn and horse fencing. These are the ones that took the largest price drop and I consider them to be the best place to invest at this time, because they are the ones that will go up the most as the market recovers. (in my opinion)
^ ^ A lotta house, although on only two thirds of an acre, you'd better be on 'good terms' with your neighbors!
True dat! I have a feeling that if it's anything like my house in Texas (on one acre, new construction, not this big but this sort of style) when you're inside you can't hear a thing outside.
It depends much on where in Finland. In rural areas you can get a mansion, in Helsinki a small flat.
Here's a couple of picks from my city, the price level here is a bit above average. Sorry, links are in Finnish, but you'll get the idea. Lots of pictures from both locations.
