Haparanda-Torneå is just separated with a small bridge.
People who have never been there before doesn´t realize they are in another country.

The five biggest cities in the USA that are adjacent to a larger city (all over 340,000) are:

Long Beach CA (Los Angeles)
Mesa AZ (Phoenix)
Oakland CA (San Francisco)
Arlington TX (Dallas)
Aurora CO (Denver)

Actually, the largest US city that is adjacent to a larger city is El Paso TX, with 672,000, dwarfed by the adjacent Cd. Juarez, Mexico (1.5 million).

In Germany, there are four cities of over a half-million with gaps of less than ten miles between them: Cologne, Essen, Dusseldorf and Dortmund.

In Saudi Arabia, Jeddah and Mecca are less than 25 miles apart, both over 1.6 million.

In China, in a continuous row, are Guangzhou (14 million), Shenzhen (10 million) and Hong Kong (7 million).

Yokohama (3.8 million) is adjacent to Tokyo.

In metro areas cities are frequently joined to each other, so the right answer is indeed "0 miles".

Bearing in mind those distances, I believe, are from city centre to city centre - Leeds and Bradford are actually connected - you can drive from one to the other without even noticing.

Here's the border between Leeds and Bradford at the Leeds suburb of Pudsey (looking from Thornbury in Bradford): http://goo.gl/maps/GkiB6

The big urban mess of northern England and the Midlands is similar to Germany's Rhur area.

That's if you go by the downtown center. I live in Chula Vista and I'm 5 miles from the border. Actually, San Ysidro, which is part of San Diego but disconnected from the main part is right on the border so 0 miles between San Diego and Tijuana.

Are you saying that fence is more than a mile thick?

In some cases, yes. The Border Fence encloses a strip between the USA and Mexico, like the Berlin Wall..
