I think a good thing to mention in regards to Manhattan having a straight grid is that there are large parts of the city where the grid is broken up and not perfectly even. The most apparent is lower Manhattan, but above that there are several streets going in diagonals to the street grid, most notably Broadway and others, and parts of the city that are a grid offset from the normal grid such as West Village and Inwood.

You've obviously not been there last winter then. Ha ha.

Manhattan is definitely the busiest among these, but I don't think that necessarily equates to vibrancy.
