Interviewer: "What country kicked your Queen's [sic] butt in 1776?"

Londoner 1: ...
Londoner 2: ... Uhh, the Spanish, was it?
Londoner 3: 1776? ... umm ... France, was it?
Londoner 4: No comment ... Haha. Is that right?
Londoner 5: Seventeen ... seventy ... six .... Would that be Guy Fawkes? I don't know
Londoner 6: Don't know.
Londoner 7: [Shakes head]
Londoner 8: No idea.

Losing a colonial conflict is not the same as having your behind kicked. It's not like Britain got invaded. Many Americans today without health insurance, living in poverty, working 2 - 3 part-time jobs for minimum wage without benefits so about half the population would have been much better off if the US would still be under the Crown.

I suppose it depends how spectacularly, or embarrassingly, you lose that conflict.

Though weren't the British beating the colonial rebels in 1776? By 1777 both New York and Philadelphia were occupied by the Brits, the Battle of Saratoga was a big victory for the rebels, but it really wasn't until the French and Spanish joined the war later on that the tide truly turned.

It was 1780 and 1781 that Cornwallis really got his arse kicked and...sorry I'm being way too technical about this, aren't I?

The interviewer should be the one embarrassed. England didn't have a queen in 1776. And yes, the American Revolution was still in full swing at that time, with the war still undecided.

1776 seems to have a very special symbolism in the US Libertarian mindset.

The Answer to 1984 is 1776 - Zazzle Hats

I can understand why some now use it as a synecdoche for the whole War of Independence.

The Constitution forbids that scenario.
The constitution DOES NOT forbid secession. It can't since it never mentions it.

Well such a ridiculous scenario deserves some ridicules replies. Of all the WHAT IF'S IN THE WORLD?? This is one you could say.... you CAN SAY... NEVER AGAIN VS NEVER SAY NEVER?? The US is still Child of the Crown. Bastard maybe? But by blood or adoption. We still are.
