Color/texture of sand, how the sun reflects/absorbs color in the water, surrounding scenery like mountains and vegetation, size of waves, etc. There are many factors but some things just can't be described IMO.
And WOW, those Whitsunday Island beaches look magnificient!
I live in Australia and the natural scenery is just so dull and uninteresting, the landscapes are grayish-green. The trees all look burnt out and so does the wilderness, it's all just really arid and dry? I see the US/Canada and Europe and they look so beautiful in comparison, strong varieties of trees, bushes and different colours as opposed to Oz. Australia looks dead in comparison, there is nothing here like Vermont, Oregon, Alaska, The Rockies or the Scandinavian countries(European Alps). The weather also is horrible with intense, deadly heat and large-scale bushfires all summer.
You are just used to Australia...
I'm from the US (lived in California, Alaska, Washington, Florida and drove across the country multiple times and traveled to many other countries). I spent a few years living in Australia (QLD) and found it to be VERY BEAUTIFUL. I traveled from Melbourne to Cairns. There were so many beautiful places!

What do you mean, "WHY is Australia's scenery so ugly..."? You're aware that much of the continent is desert, right?
If you don't like the scenery where you are, go up north, into the lush, tropical areas. The scenery is breathtaking! And some of the rock outcroppings in the dry part of the country are very dramatic. I live in New Mexico, which has some similar terrain: unusual and dramatic rock and cliff formations, and tablelands (mesas). The earth (and rock) is red, sometimes pink, which adds some color and beauty to it all.
