I get them sonewhat. The Upper Midwest especially as it has similar weather extremes. Louisiana has a similar climate to southern China. Not sure about Utah or that region in Russia.

Ukraine - Lower Midwest (Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, southern Michigan and Wisconsin) and parts of Great Plains (Nebraska, South Dakota) - similar climate, large agricultural region, similar soils (chernozem) in Great Plains.

Hungary = Missouri
Both are kind of flat, Hungary has the gigantic Danube river and Missouri has the Mighty Mississippi.

Weather is similar (Hungary just like Missouri can have very hot summers and extremely cold winters)
