Who knows, maybe there will be world peace, when the country that starts all the wars no longer thinks of itself as being invincible. Like France in their decline, the US has not attained its objective in any war it was involved in over the last 2/3 of a century. Except Grenada, the shining star of America's aggression.

Any country that can destroy the world is a super power in my book, it doesn't matter as to how many times you can destroy the world, it's irrelevant. In this sense the US, Russia and China are all super powers.

As for China it is under going a technological revolution and like the Japanese before them, they may one day rival the US in terms of technology, whilst in terms of knowledge they already have thousands of years of that.

The main difference with the Chinese is that they are generally a very inward looking country especially when compared to the US, whilst even Russia only usually becomes involved in areas within it's region of the world.

Even as things stand it would be a brave America who entered a war with China, as you know what they say about the Chinese Army, kill one battalion and there's always another waiting, and China has over 3,000 nuclear missiles, which is less than Russia's 4,500 but still enough to destroy us all.

USA will remain as the sole superpower. China is heading towards a demographic disaster due to the one child policy, and lacks any influence in the western world. China can hope for Africa, but doesn't seem to help much.

The US is too broke to be a super power. China, Russia, India and the EU are taking over at the very moment.

China is now scrapping it's one child policy, although even without this relaxation the Chinese population would still be over 1 Billion by the end of the century, although the relaxation of the law has the potential to vastly increase this number in the longer term. The authoritarian one child law was introduced in 1979, and has prevented an estimated 400 million births in China in the 35 years. In terms of China's influence in the world it is growing particularly in the economic sphere, although it also has the potential to be a global military power as well.

People here argue "America has the biggest military, the most nukes, hurr durr!". Russia doesn't seem to be impressed by that. Neither would be China. Even North Korea plays old Harry with the US on a regular basis. That leads me into believing that the US isn't the sole superpower.
They push our buttons but they know not to cross the line. no country sets up bases in Canada or Mexico and radar ships sitting just over the horizon

It just means we have a feckless president.

To answer the broader question, the answer is that it won't happen any time soon. China, while chalking up impressive growth, is a house of cards. What's more, the demographics pretty much guarantee that China is going the way of Japan in terms of economic health.

Right now, at this very moment in history, China has the largest working-age population that it ever will. Between now and 2050, China's working-age population will drop by 200,000,000 while the United States will increase by 50,000,000 according to the United Nations. Unless the Chinese start shooting their elderly, that means there will be a huge percentage of the population that will absorb resources without any economic output.

It's naive to think that a Republican president would have acted differently. The results of a major war between Russia and the US are unforeseeable and would just lead to major losses on both sides. Not even Bush would have been as stupid as to start that war...

The fact that both the US and Russia are able to do whatever they want with no consequences whatsoever leads me into thinking that the US isn't the world's sole superpower anymore. It's debatable if they ever were... Probably right after the collapse of the Soviet Union and before the expansion of the European Union.
