When one is aged, how is one being treated ?

Arguably one of the most well known Singaporean ever, Mr Lee Kwan Yew.. Now he that he has aged, noboby cares much about what he says and his opinions..

You may say that it is because what he says not doesnt make as much sense, but still to a certain extent it is because we dont care about him so much now cos he is old...

How are aged people treated where you are ?

Lee Kwan Yew has achieved more than you probably ever will, and as such should be treated with respect. I actually met him once when I worked in Singapore.

It seems that young peoples respect for their elders, which the Chinese people were once rightly known for, is dying in Singapore.

I was disappointed no one responded and is interested in this thread .. Guess they don't face so much discrimination when aged in other countries ??

It is really sick and sad how Aged are perceived over here.

I read online comments on FB people criticising him for missing the CNY dinner gathering with people on the ground due to ill health.. Saying he is paid so much to appear once a year and still he misses it..

And people spectaculating whether there will be a special one off one day public holiday when he passes away..

One of the things I hear over and over from our Singapore relatives is that they spend just about everything they make and will have to work into old age due to the cost of living.

Kind of sad to see the very old people in Singapore working in the food courts cleaning tables and carrying heavy loads of dirty dishes and eating utensils to the dishwasher. Some of them seem barely able to walk.

Here in the US many older people still have employee pension benefits in addition to Social Security and Medicare. In Singapore it's mostly CPF money.

It's not just about working to death, but that the voices of he elderly are not heard if at all

How odd. Here in Canada we hear the opposite, that the elderly have such a strong voice in politics that the young are voiceless and unseen. That the agenda of the elderly is always given the most notice, while that of the young is less important. Elder statesmen are also quite respected and listened to, often interviewed on news talk shows and the like in order to get their opinions on things. Singapore seems unusual, even from the perspective of a Westerner, and we are often criticized by Asians for not being as focused on respect for our elders. This is true, but it is not as extreme perhaps as many would pretend.

He was Singapore's first Prime Minister, basically the person who brought Singapore to where we are today.

I am not surprised that you have never heard of him, but I guess you have not heard of any other names from Singapore ?

I am in shock that Mr. Lee Kwan Yew is no longer revered in Singapore. Even if I am not Singaporean, I have profound respect for him.

So filial piety is dead in Singapore? So young Singaporeans no longer light joss sticks to their ancestors, only to Cai Shen (Money God)?

I'm sure many still revere him or at least respect/are grateful for what he did, even if they have mixed feelings over him.
