Putin is always taking his shirt off and wrestling with grizzly bears etc, so I am guessing this macho image is popular in Russia.
America had a president like that once. Teddy Roosevelt. Most Americans think he was one of the best presidents we ever had. Isn't that proof that "the macho image is popular in America"? Doesn't Sarah Palin wrestle grizzly bears? Or at least advocate the image?

Just out of curiosity, how many of you can complete:
1. 50 correct form push ups, without stopping to rest.
2. 100 correct form push ups, without stopping to rest.
If you fall into either category, which culture/national group do you identify with the most?
Exclusion criteria:
1. Must not currently serve in armed forces or law enforcement.
2. Must not have any history of involvement in a sporting profession involving upper limb strength.

Roosevelt never put on exhibitions of strength. He believed men should be healthy and women should be liberated.
I'm not sure there is any culture that has no traditional ideal of masculine strength.
"Highest value" is something hard to determine, though, as most any culture that survives today learned to translate the value of brute strength to wisdom/age/cleverness or some other value at some point. It's been a long time that the physically strongest male in town was always made the king.
Slavic countries- USSR was very stong in athletics, more national pride based-
Iceland- strong men competition obsessed with weight lifting. i dont see other northern european countries like that though
United States- athletics is huge in here. More family pride and glory based

There are people who can bench press 1.5 times their body weight and cannot do 50 perfect form push ups; I would not call them weak, but push ups are not solely a function of strength.
