In which country would you prefer to live?
Pros of Italy:
- More history
- Less remote
- More natural beauty. Australia has unique wildlife, but it lacks greenery due to the fact that most of it is a desert
- Big cities in Italy are much less further away from each other than in Australia
- More chance of snow in winter. Plus, snow in Italy can fall on winter holidays (Christmas/New Year), when it should be. I wouldn't like "winter" holidays to be in summer.
Pros of Australia:
- Probably better overall quality of life, richer.
- English-speaking. I'm not a native English speaker, but I already know it quite well, while I almost don't know Italian.
Australia. I used to dream of living in Italy, and while it's beautiful, it's just too 'Italian' and I don't know how well I'd adapt. Italians have a certainly way of doing thing that frustrates even the Italian, but 'la dolce vita' is certainly magical. Australia is more multicultural. For instance, it's surprising hard to find good foreign food in Rome, as good as Italian cuisine is.

It could also depend on what stage in life you are, how long you plan to stay, what are your plans for the future.
If you are around 18, plan to stay 6 months to four years, and do not plan to start building a career and, eventually, a family right away, then Italy may be the better choice as a general cultural learning experience.
However, Italy is not the best place to come to as an outsider without good connections, start a career or business, pay more than 50% of your income in taxes for less-than-proportional services in return, and raise a family. I would feel more confident about such things in a country like Australia.
I'm asking what country people view as better place to live. Why you don't understand that?
Because I'm a banal man, I see what I see.
So which is it, prefer or better? What does "prefer" mean? What does "better" mean? Is this an either/or proposition? Better for what?
I use a screwdriver to drive screws, I use a hammer to hammer nails.
One tool for one purpose, another tool for another.
Italy and Australia are two different countries with different pasts, different presents, and different futures.
Better for what? To live? Life is movement and risk.
Where are you in that dynamic (stagnation?) and where do you realistically want to be now and in five years from now?
Italy for understanding the ambiguity of human nature.
Australia for managing it and maybe improving it at the margins, a bit.
Hope this helps.
