It depends on where and what industry. In some parts of the US, i.e. the coasts and most major metros, Latinos are generally looked upon as the same as anyone else, but there are other regions, especially areas with a larger immigrant vs. Chicano population, where there are waaaaaay more than enough negative stereotypes associated with Latinos, especially Mexicans… which I find abhorrent. I have huge amounts of respect for Latinos and grew up with many immigrant and Chicano friends.

Well I live in CA and have worked in all types of industries- fast food, higher education, biology labs, social services. I have also worked at the federal, state, and county levels where there are an abundance of Latino Managers, supervisors, and leaders. I have never heard that stereotype and on the contrary, have heard from employers that they like hiring Latinos because they tend to be dedicated, hard working people.

If this is a stereotype in other areas of the US, that's a shame. I know there are issues with Mexican-Americans and education, but I don't think studies capture the diversity of the population. There are continuous waves of immigrants but there are also 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation Mexican-Americans that are succesful.

I am Mexican-American and studied biochemistry and then international relations. I didn't like being stuck in a lab!

List of semi-finalists at the National Spelling Bee will show that monolingual English speakers do not necessarily have that "advantage" of knowing how to spell their own language: Scripps National Spelling Bee: SEMIFINALISTS
Champions have mostly been Indian Americans.
