Well I live in CA and have worked in all types of industries- fast food, higher education, biology labs, social services. I have also worked at the federal, state, and county levels where there are an abundance of Latino Managers, supervisors, and leaders. I have never heard that stereotype and on the contrary, have heard from employers that they like hiring Latinos because they tend to be dedicated, hard working people.
If this is a stereotype in other areas of the US, that's a shame. I know there are issues with Mexican-Americans and education, but I don't think studies capture the diversity of the population. There are continuous waves of immigrants but there are also 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation Mexican-Americans that are succesful.
I am Mexican-American and studied biochemistry and then international relations. I didn't like being stuck in a lab!
