I went out with a Scottish guy a long time ago. He insisted that I watch Local Hero. It was pretty amusing, I liked it.

Interesting suggestions so far.

Somewhat surprisingly, of all the lists submitted, the one which has the most movies I have already seen is by Greysholic. I've seen two of his Ang Lee movies plus the two from other countries he recommended.

Canada:

Mommy (2014) directed by Xavier Dolan, it just won the Jury Prize at this year's Cannes film festival.
The Sweet Hereafter (1997) directed by Atom Egoyan
The Barbarian Invasions (2003) directed by Denys Arcand (Oscar for best foreign film)
Goin' Down the Road (1970) directed by Donald Shebib
and Strange Brew (1983) directed by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas (for comedy relief... this list is drama heavy)

I recomend to NOT watch movies from my country. They depict the worst things, such as drug cartels, slums and famine - as if these things would be the rule, not the exception. Worst: these movies are for self-promotion by directors over the misfortune of these people.

City of God
Brazil, 1960's, City of God. The Tender Trio robs motels and gas trucks. Younger kids watch and learn well...too well. 1970's: Li'l Zé has prospered very well and owns the city. He causes violence and fear as he wipes out rival gangs without mercy. His best friend Bené is the only one to keep him on the good side of sanity. Rocket has watched these two gain power for years, and he wants no part of it. Yet he keeps getting swept up in the madness. All he wants to do is take pictures. 1980's: Things are out of control between the last two remaining gangs...will it ever end? Welcome to the City of God.

I've seen it. It shows a dark side of Brazil but it is a powerful film.
