The "White House" in the evening

What a good thread. I eat this stuff up. Whenever I'm travelling, this is the kind of stuff I find most interesting. More than the touristy stuff - what is it actually like to live in these places? That's such a fascinating question to me.

I'm in transition mode in my real life right now (prepping for a big move), so here are some pics of my daily life from when I lived in Cape Town last summer (ie. winter in that hemisphere). Pic heavy, so it's behind a spoiler mask.

Spoiler

View from my apartment

Sometimes the clouds do fun things

Somewhere between my apt building and the grocery store (about a 10-15 minute walk)

My building from the outside

Walking past South African Parliament on the way to the bus station (remember that SA has three capital cities - CPT for the legislative branch, Pretoria for the executive/administrative branch, and Bloemfontein for the judicial branch)

The bus station itself

Taken from the bus on my circa hour-long commute to work (I got to see this twice a day every day)

Looking the other way

I worked at an NGO after-school program with a lot of young kids, so occasionally stuff like this happened

("Chborn must not go into the storom om There own
osk the t cha' to unbko the boor with a kiy" = "Children must not go into the store room on their own. Ask the teacher to unlock the door with a key")

At work during a torrential downpour

Cape Town city hall, on my walk home from the bus station

Morning on Adderley St

My fav fav place in all of Cape Town, The Field Office coffee shop. Amazing sandwiches and good, reliable wifi

And my other Cape Town fav, the Eastern Food Bazaar - everything from Turkish to Indian to Chinese, pretty much everything is less than $5 or $6 and the portion sizes are enormous

This little hole-in-the-wall just about saved my life - this is where I always went to buy cell phone minutes and Osman is probably the nicest dude in Africa

About 1/5 (?) of the population is Muslim, and Ramadan happened while I was there, so it makes sense for public places to provide accommodations

Company's Garden downtown, great place to go to read and eat lunch outside

About halfway through my time there I wound up having to move to another apartment with an even better view

On my way to the city centre to get some shopping done. In the background: The dome of the Museum of Natural History.
