Just wondering how much attention you pay to security where you live and how preoccupied people are with theft where you live.

Do you leave your home's door unlocked?
Do you have a security system?
Do you leave your bike unlocked outside?
Do you lock your car doors?
Do you leave any other items unlocked or unsecured outside your home (chairs, barbecue, planters, etc.)?

And anything else you might want to share.

And how those questions apply for those of us who live in apartment buildings that have a doorman?

You can answer for when you are out and about in the city.

Do you hold onto your iPhone tightly when walking around?

Will you leave your belongings unattended at the café if you are just going to go get a napkin?

Stuff like that.

Also, what is the security like in your building? Is the doorman extremely strict or "loose"?

In the case of my building, I would call it "loose".

And I wouldn't leave my belongings unattended in the bar (what is a café? ) while going to the bathroom... Not that it would be stolen "for sure", but I don't like to take any chances...

I keep everything locked up as do most people in my area. Since I live in an apt. building we have a security system for the building which includes an intercom to the main entrance building and security cameras for both the main entrance as well as the back/service entrance to the building.

.
So if I walk in and say I am visiting my friend on the 8th floor, he'll likely let me in without asking too many questions?

As known in Europe and the USA, very few...

We have bakeries, we have "lanchonetes", but not exactly "cafés"...

In the case of my building, if the doorman already knows you (or he thinks that he knows you) he will probably let you into the elevator and just call your friend in the 8th floor using the intercom to tell him that you are already in the elevator.

If the doorman thinks you are a complete stranger that he never saw before, he will probably first call your friend in the 8th floor asking if he knows you and if you can go in.

But not all buildings here are so "loose"...
