This is inspired by another thread down the page, "Best 'smaller' cities". Instead of that poll, I'm only interested in seeing which cities with a population under 500,000 persons have your respect. Most cities under a million don't see the light of day in terms of discussion here, so hopefully this will make an interesting thread.

As far as whether I meant city proper, metro, or urban populations... it doesn't matter as long as some more or less official interpretation of the population doesn't exceed 500 K.

Some examples might be:

Girona, Spain
Victoria, Canada
Salzburg, Austria
Plzen, Czech Republic
Haridwar, India

Oh, last I checked I thought it was like 400K something. Didn't know that it is different now.

Minneapolis, Minnesota is one of my favorite American mid-sized cities. It is modern, very open and it was heavily influenced by Swedish/Finnish immigration. It has its own unique culture and I really miss it sometimes.

I understand why you mentioned the above and I don't mean to be a nerd but there's a bit of a problem when Vilnius or Quebec City (over 500k by any measure) cannot be in a discussion for small cities, yet Minneapolis, Atlanta or Miami can.

But anyway. My favorite <500k cities (metro area):

Ljubljana, Slovenia
Annecy, France
Cadiz, Spain
Kotor, Montenegro
Savannah, Georgia (USA)

All three of those cities (the American ones) do I have a population way over 500K though. I should've said no cities with a metro over 500K according to some sort of official measurement intead. I guess that wasn't so clear, but my intent was to prevent some cities from being mentioned because they have like an extra 2000 people or something.

Good choices, though.
