Judging by urban or metro population, what would you think the smallest city that has some significance on the global scale is?

Contenders include Geneva (900k metro), Reykjavik, (230k metro) and there are many others as well.

Reykjavik has definitely become more global with the expansion of Icelandair as well as it's music/cultural scene.

Also the 900k figure for Geneva is if you include the nearby French areas. If not it's 600k.

What about cities like Cambridge in USA or Oxford in England? They are well known in the whole world due to their world renowned universities. And they are pretty small.

As I much as I dislike the place, Boulder Colorado has worldwide recognition due to the University of Colorado and a number of successful tech companies being located there. Boulder only has around 100k people.

I nominate Vatican City. Population in the hundreds, but is the center of Catholicism.

Cambridge in the USA is probably considered part of Boston in any global city rankings I would imagine.

I always though MIT and Harvard were in Boston until I joined the forum. The UK Cambridge would have better international recognition I think, and its only slightly bigger than Cambridge Massachusetts.

But it’s basically Rome, a global city.
