I was wondering if people living in various countries around the world took pride and followed the accomplishments of people who immigrated to another country and became famous there, or of famous people who are of the same ethnic origin but were born and raised in another country.

Do Italians get excited over Rubens Barrichello?

What about Poles and Miroslav Klose?

Austrians and Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Bosnians and Croats over Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

And so on...

Can't really think of a Dutch person who became famous after moving to another country
btw Ibrahimovic was born and raised in Sweden.

Yes, Pamela Anderson and the astronaut Timothy Kopra. The NBA basketball player Drew Gooden has been persuaded to play for the Finnish national team several times, and now again before the upcoming Basketball World Championship. One Finn signed the declaration of independence, but I can't remember his name, so maybe he is not a pride. Matt Damon is also Finnish-American, but can't remember anyone taking any pride from it.

And oh, German F1 driver Nico Rosberg is usually taken for at least 50% Finnish, though he has said his identity is Monagesque German.

Yes but both his parents are from the former Yugoslavia. In some places that's good enough to be considered part of the "nation", even if you've never even lived there.

I am wondering which countries are like this.

What about the two Roosevelts who became President of the United States? (OK, their roots in the U.S. went back very far...)

Or Dick van Dyke?

Yes, her great-greatgrandfather emigrated from Finland. She visited her "hometown" some years ago and attracted much media attention.

Other people Finns sometime takes some pride in are who have lived or had semi-permanent residences here. These people include Vladimir Putin and the new King of Spain Felipe VI. (Putin had a second home here in Turku in the 90's.)

For the Dutch, how about film-maker Paul Verhoeven?

Any nationalistic-related affinity in the NL for his Hollywood movies like Robocop, Basic Instinct or Total Recall?

I hope you remember Linda Brava (Lampenius) from Finland also. Starring as a violinist in distress in Baywatch.
