Aboriginal Australians are called "black", so it's not like it only ever refers to the African diaspora. If the UK didn't have significant African and Caribbean immigrant communities, British Indians would probably be called "black" too.

They are mostly referred to as Indigenous these days. We have to be very careful how to use the term “black”, acceptable as an adjective but not so much as a noun.

Black by association? Like curies? Whomever you tag has it from that moment forward. Where is Rachel Dolezal when she is wanted? lol

Although it hasn't caught on yet, but there is such a thing as being one race while having a greater interest on another. Take Rachel Dolezal as an example. Whether she wants to or not, she is white; however she is a white inclined more towards the blacks. I think there is nothing wrong with that because that's truly what she is, a white with inclinations towards black.

Kamala Harris is mixed. She can be inclined more to her South Asian side or to the black side or she can't be inclined to any of the two accepting each part in equal terms. If, for example, she was inclined towardsthe hlack, then she would be a mixed inclined towards blacks. Her condition of being mixed doesn't changes because it's impossible to change it, you are born what you are and that's that.

At least I would never see Kamala Harris as black. Either mixed inclined towards blacks (or towards South Asians) or part black, because that's what she is.

Forcing mixed people to choose a side and/or not respecting how that person wants to be seen (given that is that perdon's decision and no one else's) should be taboo, maybe even illegal to stop this nonsense.

If you are a mixed race person and some people want you to choose when for whatever reason you don't want to, then don't. They are not you and that's a personal decision. The problem isn't you, its them. They don't have a right to cause you to have an identity crisis simply because they don't want to accept what nature/God wanted you to be. Otherwise you would had never been born as a mixed person. Nature/God is above any mortal.

Considering the lack of progress in the last 50 years I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at what's happened since this thread was started in 2014.

Unfortunately this is all just a very thinly disguised effort to "grade" or scale people by their skin color with the tacit assumption that lighter is better. Oh, the complex, sophisticated arguments of "this" continent or "this" culture or "they themselves say" really comes down to who is lighter than who.

Disgusting and pointless. This shouldn't even be in the "World" forum but in POC - that it IS here allows people to fool themselves into thinking this is somehow a meaningful distinction and worthwhile topic of discussion. It is damaging and hurtful.
