It just goes to show you that the USA really isn't too unsafe compared to other countries. Even cities like Detroit, New Orleans, and Baltimore don't even compare to other world cities like Ciudad Juarez or Caracas when it comes to crime.
Compared to other industrialized nations, it is high.
Stricter gun laws within different regions of the US mean nothing when you can easily cross into one state to another.
You must compare countries and compare gun crime in those countries that have stricter gun laws than the US.

So it is true that it is a deathwish to travel to Honduras.
It has serious problems, but mostly in its cities. The country is dominated by franchises of two warring street gangs originally from LA, Mara Salvatrucha and 18th Street Gang. Alot of the women are employed in the maquiladoras, but the men have trouble finding employment, often, in the new urbanized, globalized Honduras, and what work there is isn't always stable. The government has banana republic tendancies, protecting the interests of the mostly White old stock elite families who run the country. Reaction to the gangs has meant a militarization of police forces, and out of uniform cops driving around in unmarked cars, shooting street kids in drive-bys if they look like they might be in a gang, or even if they just look poor enough that they might join one, they're called death cars. Just, not a nice situation, definitely one of the most dangerous Latin American countries. The countryside isn't as dangerous, since it is, for the most part, away from both the gangs and the police in the city.
I don't think going to Honduras means you have deathwish, but it is a place where the people live in fear of crime. Go there only if you know what you're doing travelling in rough third world countries, not a place I'd recommend to random backpackers or pleasure tourists looking to take in an exotic city.

duh, of course, almost NO city in the world can compare to those cities you mentioned, wich are probably among the most dangerous cities in the world. Heck, Buenos aires, who some people may say is not very safe, is the Principality of Monaco next to Caracas or Ciudad Juarez.
I don't think anyone's surprised that 2nd world and 3rd world countries have higher crime rates than the US. The point is that for a first world country, the US's crime rate is pretty bad.
according to that wikipedia link that the OP posted, US and Argentina have the same crime rate. And US is first world....
Its true that next to european countries, US rate is pretty bad (also Argentina crime rate is very low next to some latin american countries)
