But, it is just as frustrating when you hear an American saying the same stupid stuff, and often their saying these things is a means of compensation, trying to make them feel like they're "better" than other Americans. "Hey hey hey, wait! I love the BBC, I can find Peru on a map, I never shop at Walmart, I want to own a Smart Car, I love French cheese and Italian wines, so I'm not really all that American!" It's like, yes, you are, and your tastes aren't all that unique among Americans, honestly... nor is your attitude! I think it becomes more obvious once you leave the US for another country and are looking at it from the outside.
I'm not even quite sure what it "means" to be an American. Other than the fact that you're a U.S. citizen, being an American can be anything or everything.
And even lots of non-U.S. citizens own some of the best and richest properties in America.
