The U.S. is surely not the cheapest first world country to live in. The main reason are probably the high costs for health care and education. ...
In my opinion Germany seems to be significant cheaper than the U.S. Here are some examples:

One of the best, if not the best, posts ever here on city data. This one should be made sticky. Exactly what I've been saying all the time too. As to why Americans wrongfully believe they live in the cheapest country: entitlement and arrogance. They think they are entitled to being 'the best', 'the cheapest', 'the richest', 'the most developed', etc. Even if none of that is true they persistently refuse to accept otherwise.

You don't speak for me, entitiled isn't it I have worked for everything I have no-one has given me anything that is the case with many other Americans. I think that you are reading the competitive nature of some Americans as arrogance.

Very true. But the main thing that the US has an advantage over other first world nations is the potential to make a high income. But then again, that doesn't apply to a LARGE portion of the population, so it really doesn't matter what the brochure says.
You can make a high income pretty much in any first world country, depending on what you're doing.
I mean, doesn't your income have to do with your job? And not which country you live in?

No, the US is not the least expensive 1st world country, Spain maybe? However, if you are in the top 20% in the USA, you will have much more available money in the USA due to lower taxes and higher incomes. If you are in the bottom 20%, USA has fewer benefits provided by the government so a tougher life than in Europe's bottom 20% in my opinion.

No you just take things to heart, many people just simply think the cost of living here is cheaper... that is it... and it doesnt translate to "we are the best!" we just think the cost of living here is pretty low.

We have social security, Medicaid, food stamps, Section 8. what kind of stuff do they have in other 1st world nations.
