Portuguese and German are pretty much tied.
Maybe, but for different reasons.
Portuguese is important for business, since Brazil is a huge country, with a society leaning to spend money and with scarce knowledge in English. German, for academic purposes, because it's only behind of English (and tied with French) in the scientific and academic journals.

of course Japanese is useful in Japan. You can probably save 50% of your budget in China/Thailand if you speak Chinese/Thai.

I encountered no linguistic difficulty while traveling in Japan. At least in the service sector, most people speak some English (restaurants, public transport, airport, attractions, hotels, even convenient store), and people are very nice. I don't think I was gouged in any way because I don't speak Japanese.

English, Chinese and Spanish are on their own tier globally.

Then German, Russian and Arabic.

Then Japanese.

Then Portuguese.

Lastly, Hindi and Bengali.

I think, of the 10...I would only categorize Hindi and Bengali as somewhat useless, outside of any interest in Bollywood or actually living in India. Because even in those countries, English is the language of choice for business, and preferred by the elite, as India is a multilingual nation with too much ethnic tension for Hindi to be the predominant language. I think there are similar issues in different countries in Africa.

I am not sure why Russian is ranked so low on here for many. It is the lingua franca for a huge portion of Eurasia, especially those countries that used to be USSR. Perhaps it shows the Western bias of most posters? I don't know. Part of it might be that West Asia and Eastern Europe (with few exceptions) are still a bit of a blind spot for most of us Americans.

I would like to know your reasoning for having Japanese as number two, being that is only really spoken inside Japan and among the Japanese culture aficionados/anime geeks. I might be missing something though.
