You think picking spots that are NOT random is more scientific?

Funny to see this thread continuing so long.

Taking 'natural scenery' to mean nature, I simply don't think there are many places in the world that match California's monumental geology, beautiful and rugged coastline, virgin and old-growth forests, vast deserts, mountain ranges, chapparal, and canyons.

California's North and Central coasts are largely pristine, with only a few major bays and peninsulas supporting significant populations. The coastline from Del Norte county through Marin county and from Santa Cruz county through Santa Barbara county is stunning and contains minimal human habitation.

California's large and broad Central & San Joaquin Valleys are encircled by mountain ranges, including the coast ranges which rise dramatically from the sea and the mighty Sierra Nevada, a mountain range 400 miles long and 70 miles wide full of high peaks (30 peaks over 10,000 ft), verdant valleys, alpine lakes, waterfalls, granite formations, and the most massive living creatures on Earth--the Sequoiadendron giganteum.

California is on a nutrient rich stretch of the Pacific, where the ocean's marine life migrates between seasons. Sea life including whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, numerous sea birds, sharks, otters, and other creatures are common sights near California's coast. The Pacific's waves and storms have no peer in the Mediterranean.

On land, California is one of the most biodiverse places in the United States. California sees more than 600 species of bird, 180 terrestrial mammals, 40 marine mammals, plus dozens of reptiles, dozens of amphibians, and diverse plant and insect life.

There are few political boundaries that contain such diverse geology, climate, and biodiversity. Those that do dwarf California in size--places like Canada, Argentina, Brazil, and China.

California's protected land is estimated around 47% of the State's landmass, compared to roughly 21% of Italy's land (both Italy and California are of similar size).

Talking about wildlife, let's also add that a good number of plant and animal species in CA are endemic.

Italy has the more beautiful coastline with bluer waters and better beaches. Italy has more inhabited islands. Italy has the Alps.

I don't find deserts scenic whatsoever, so the entire Mojave and Antelope Valley area is very ugly to me. The Central Valley isn't really scenic, especially considering it often has terrible air quality so you can't even see the mountain ranges surrounding it.
