I'm surprised that Canada would be a so polemic country!!
I thought most of the answers would be about countries like the BRICS, for exemplo.
I personaly don't remember about being asked something absurdly stupid, but a lot of brazilians say they do are overseas. On Youtube lots of interchange students like to post videos telling their experiences, and they always tell about the most absurd things they have been asked about Brazil.
I believe that happens also because of the age of the people envolved in these situations.
Therefore I remember something similar inside Brazil. People from São Paulo love to tease people from Rio, for exemple, making these kind of questions.

Well like any country Mr. Falcon - best experienced by visiting as opposed to impressions on an internet forum
Speaking of which - I am visiting your country in 1 week.. Got my Brazilian visa posted into my passport from the Brazilian Consulate in Toronto so I am all ready to go. Very excited
I moved to Portugal from the U.S. Someone asked me if I had a hard time learning Spanish.
I had a friend whose family moved to the U.S. from Portugal. He said that in school the American kids thought that Portugal was Puerto Rico.
LOL! I think this happens everywhere.
My Brazilian family(husband's) asked if Mexicans walked around with big sombreros sleeping alot (seriously).
When I was in Spain I told them I was Californian, but since I spoke Spanish they all placed me in South America. It was such a foreign concept for all of them, quite strange. They would continuously ask me what life was like in South America. I would tell my roommate over and over again I lived in the U.S, but he would still ask 'In South America, do you guys do this?'
Well i'm only there for 8 days so just Rio and Sao Paulo but the visa is good for 5 years so I will be returning to visit more thoroughly... If you have any recommendations feel free to PM me

They may have watched too many episodes of Speedy Gonzales. LoL that used to be one of my favorite cartoons I didn't realize they were perpetuating ethnic stereo types until I was an adult. I still get a kick out watching it though.

haha, I love those cartoons. In general, I try to be patient with people who have never traveled and have never met people from other countries. I know they usually don't mean harm, if they are asking questions with a general interest, it is all good.
The worst is intentional ignorance brought out from a higher than thou attitude. I can feel that in an instant and it infuriates me.
Americans thinking that Canadians live in igloos and drive sled dogs to work is the stuff of legend in my country, but I've never had an American say that to me.
Americans are generally quite clueless about Canada though. Just not to that extreme.
Generally they either think it is going to be exactly like the US or they think it will be exactly like the UK. Or France.
As an American I can attest to the common stereotype most American ascribe Canadians too. We generally feel that Canadians are almost JUST LIKE Americans, just our northern brothers. Only difference is they live in an incredibly cold area, they say "ehh" all the time, and words like house and mouse sound funny, and some of them speak French as a first language. Other than that Canadians are looked on as American cousins basically.

I just returned- I love Rio, you will have a fantastic time. It is an amazing city.
Just be very careful using credit and debit cards down there, there is a high percentage of fraud. My husband warned me not to and I thought he was being overly-paranoid. I used my credit card at 3 decent restaurants, next thing I know, someone cloned my card, added their name, and tried to use it to buy expensive electronics. Luckily the card company caught on and shut the card down.
Use cash only if possible!
