Life is much more than Independent Cafes no doubt. Although, having some around are ultra convenient and offering observable value to all of society.

Best of luck on your travels and college studies.
(Part of) What i was trying to tell you is that the term Independent Cafes, the way you use it, is wrong. Independent cafes are everything that isn't a chain, not just cafes you like (e.g. with wifi, ornate furniture, ecc.). This is my bar of choice due to the patio outside and being in a quite residential area. It may not be chic but it is an independent cafe:

Aside from that, i'm curious to hear what you thought of Genoa and the other cities you went to. And i repeat, the area surrounding the Duomo is one you shouldn't like, it's full of chains after all, maybe the place with the most. And i'm sure you would love Naples, next time head there! You won't regret it, just ask me for advices before going, i can send you to place where you'd have a culinary orgasm. Also, did you find the shisha or hookah (they are the same thing, aren't they?) you so much strive for here in Italy?

Independent Cafe realm is undeniably a Global Universal phenomenon of necessary spirituality. Never just a North American thing. Overseas people deserve to have an equal amount of these treats around to enjoy when they desire or crave them.
OP, they DON'T CRAVE them!!

All 198 nations of Planet Earth even distribution of resources in a hopefully fair reality. Never just one country? Trust me, these relevant wifi friendly Cafes supporting those types of service technically are already in at least 25 to 59 countries. Whenever I want to, I am able to have this lifestyle around at least 25 nations to 100 cities rather easily any Continent Europe, Asia, in between and having their own unique worthwhile ambiance. People taking advantage of these international Cafes is starting to occur.
Your lifestyle is quite ...different. Not everyone crave this kind of "unique worthwhile ambiance"..

Fortunately, these Wifi supportive cafes seemed to happen at around the same exact timing everywhere when the Computers got invented, subsequently to the Internet, and the ultimate creation of the World Wide Web where we now have thousands to millions of websites. What an incredible revolution people may not acknowledge. I can't believe in my own lifetime (I am only 23 years old, Very Young) the Internet, and Computers was barely even existing before I was getting older.
They used to be common when computers and internet access was expensive. Not anymore.
Computer cafes are disappearing in the developed countries, they might be still common where the poor live...

Honestly, I never want to become an overly arrogant American or thinking we are number one. Independent Cafes staying wireless Internet friendly is existing around lots of countries already. Global Universal, never American. Computers, and the Internet have an equal representation of invention at the countries of France, Germany, Switzerland, UK too. One relevant factual detail people really have to learn: First website of the entire World happened at Cern Science Lab of France/Switzerland Rhone-Alpes/Geneva area. Not USA.
... huh??

Those Austrian Independent Cafes are pictures from the Internet. Experience of visiting made me observe lots of people using their own laptop computers at Cafe Central, and even Cafe Mozart. I asked the employee workers if they have laptop computer wireless internet, everyone exclaimed yes.
I doubt it...
Been there, and didn't see anyone entertained by their gadgets...
BTW: what's "laptop computer wireless internet"?? You meant Wi-Fi?

Quote:
After traveling around 11 countries, people camping out with their own computers at a Cafe is happening everywhere. I have visualized these accounts at Bratislava Slovakia, Prague Czech Republic, Paris France, Nice French Mediterranean, Vienna Austria, Innsbruck Tyrol, Milan Italy, Bucharest Romania, Constanta Romania, and I bet Saigon Vietnam even more.
^^^ Oh, I get it! ...lol...

Why not everything simultaneously? People having their laptop computer at the Cafe, talking to whoever they are with, including right in front of them, reading the newspaper, talking person to person. Drinking wonderful coffee. Having a meal. Listening to a song. Finally, taking in all of their surroundings. Very easy balance to achieve whenever.
You see... that's considered a pretty rude behavior. It clashes with the etiquette of using your gadget politely. Here's the epitome of arrogance - people playing with their gadgets while having dinner/drinks/coffee with someone.

Don't be so narrowminded. People who have very flexible working hours or work independently, like freelance reporters, often work on their laptops in cafés here. They go to cafés for the sole reason of working, as they prefer it over sitting at home.

Sure most people go to cafés to socialise, but there's always the other segment too.

They serve beer. That's what every popular independent cafe bar with world class ambience should do. I'm sold. Very Austrian. No wifi needed.

Can someone explain to me why people need Wifi? Especially in a café?

We all have our smartphones. They are already connected with the internet. What's the benefit of Wifi? I think it would be too complicated for me to change the way the smartphone is connected with the internet.

We don't need porcelain mugs, chairs or tables either, but they sure are a nice addition in a café.

That doesn't answer my question

Is wifi faster? Or do they want to download huge files? And they only have limited download volumes on their devices? Wifi is pretty uncommon in Germany. I think because of legal issues. But I don't understand the need for wifi?

Which percentage of people work independently? How many of them are willing to work outside of their homes? How many of them don't rely on Wi-fi already? All in all, the kind of people who needs and is actively searching for wi-fi in a bar or a cafe is a little minority. And it's for this reason that wi-fi is a plus.

A lot. Really. Many workers who work mainly on their computer don't have to go to the office at all. My stepdad works for an IT company and he goes to the office maybe once in two weeks.

And many want to "go to work", and concentrate much better in a café than in their homes where they can get more easily distracted.

Very common here.
