Never been but I know some people who have, my uncle was stationed at a military base in Murmansk, Russia. He said it was one of the most coldest and miserable places he has ever been too. But maybe it's because he was born in subtropical Crimea.

That must have been during the Cold War area. The place seems pretty gloomy - and is very polluted.

Well yeah, he's almost 60 now. Born sometime in the late 50s. Though considering how far north Murmansk is, it's climate isn't all to bad.

No but I live quite close to the arctic circle, the furthest north I've been is 57N.

I live at 59°N (Oslo) and that is pretty far from the Artic circle. It is actually over 1,000 km / 620 mi by car.
