I bet you hit some money along your way. Life without money, career, any distraction is tough in USA. America lacks lateral and vertical social cohesion BIG time, and there are some remnants of that in Europe grom what I've heard, tiny remnants. So if money/career didnt pan out, gosh help you in USA, there is nothing literally to fall back on in that case, even your family, if any, will shun you (more).
Status anxiety on top of other anxieties and social segregation are extreme here, people remind isolated rats on a treadmill. Many feel the same way I do, but all must run. In a way, USA is a very contemplative place to be, it makes you think about meaning of life and the direction everything goes a lot, and those are not happy thoughts. All the human genius, technologies, goods, institutions and... this, it is very disappointing. It is not to say that other places got it, it is to say that a cutting edge, in many ways, society didnt get it.
I am thinking long term, and as an immigrant to US, I think I made the right choice because Europe is only going downhill from here.
More British Muslims serve for terrorist group ISIS than serve for the British Army.
Grooming gangs raping underage girls across the UK. Rotherham 1400.
Annual car burning in Paris.
Malmö Sweden is the rape capital of Europe.
National flags and anthems are seen as racist in many European countries.
Welfare states that will be drained till they collapse.
I am European in the USA and my vote goes to Europe! America is all about the work and in Europe it is work and pleasure.
This really depends on where you work, in the US. Some state jobs, university jobs especially, are laid back and allow for a good balance between work and leisure. Generous vacation allowance, too. There must be other sectors like that, as well.
it seems people have more "joie de vivre" in parts of europe.
i live in washington DC and it feels like the city exists primarily to support the 9-5 rat race. Central DC is block after block of office buildings and chain restaurants for the 9-5 crowd. life here is rather boring and stressful at the same time. if given the opportunity i would move to paris. i love the cafe culture and it seems like people just take a little more time to enjoy life. not to mention the city is beautiful and full of history, two things i place a lot of value on
Joie de vivre is cultural, in part. There's plenty of it in California coastal towns, while in Europe it crops up more in the southern countries than central or northern.

My opinion of joie de vivre is that I don't have to work overtime ever, and 7-yo kids can walk to school alone. Joie de vivre is also an excellent meal you did with your SO.
... Otherwise when it's 6C overcast and rain on a November day it's difficult to express it otherwise.

Yes. This is why you don't run into it much in Seattle. This is why it's more of a coastal California thing, in my experience. Florida, too, I would imagine.
And believe it or not, there are plenty of employers in the US that don't allow overtime. Because they don't want to pay for it. (The hourly pay rate jumps up 50% for overtime work. It's double for weekends.)

No thank you.
The events you are mentioning in your post, while real and problematic, are far from typical of the European continent. Indeed the Muslims population, which you seem to have a problem with, is only significant in some areas located in some European countries and are definitely not representative of a continent the size of Europe.
On the other hand the US is also struggling with problems such as gun violence, police brutality, racial segregation, ethnic gangs (Mainly hispanic, but also Black, White trash, and others), inequality, still most Americans aren't affected by these problems in their daily lives.
At the end of the day I believe that the right place to live is the place that feels right.

This is funny. I would be so damn happy if I lived up north. Well, sorta. People where I live are mostly depressed, or maybe it's just because I live in an HLM... or whatever. The country of joie d'vivre isn't that happy I think. x))

Yes I know. What I meant was that there is so many different ways of enjoying life. Joie de vivre is not only and exclusively meaning sipping wine in a Mediterranean medieval beach city, if someone meant that. Obviously going to the beach here this time of the year would be quite ludicrious.

No way. We dislike guns and casinos so much.
