Medellin being dangerous is a big hollywood cliche.
Escobar days have been over about two decades ago.... The reality is that Medellin and Colombia in general is safer than its reputation claims it to be.
Not only that but their crime rate has been plummeting for several years now
America's huge crime rate is the result of the horrible social inequality! And unless you start addressing it, you can expect even more crime and chaos your way!!!
You can't give a few everything and then a lot nothing and expect them to be happy!
^^^This. Exclude people from the mainstream economy and they will create an underground economy any way they can.
Good point as that argument is weak as well. In the US, Black gangs tend to target other Blacks. Latino gangs other Latinos, Asian gangs other Asians etc.
It might change if blacks can be bankers, Latinos can be engineers, and Asians can be singers, etc.
If there are just so many choices for you, and you don't like/qualify any of them, you are likely to go wild.
That's really sad to see US cities in this top 50, how is that possible in a develop country? They don't have any police in these cities? Maybe they should send the army and set up a curfew?
I was surprised that only a few of US cities in the list. Are there any police in the US? I thought they had to defend themselves with their guns
Curious that with 20 Brasilian cities on the list, the two largest - Sao Paulo and Rio, are not in the top 50.
Sau Paulo and Rio both have low rates. Last I saw they were around 13 per 100,000 and 9 per 100,000 respectively. Might have to do with large government presence and that such a large population and density make sit hard for people to commit crimes without witnesses or police less than a mile away.
Exclude people from the mainstream economy and they will create an underground economy any way they can.
It is debatable whether any Americans are "excluded" from the mainstream economy.
The bigger problem is that certain people are unable or unwilling to take advantage of the opportunities that exist. Lack of educational attainment on the part of certain Americans is perhaps the worst problem facing this society.
