As (surprise surprise) people don't read but the OP (which was quite unclear in the previous thread), but the question is interesting, I'll try again. This was the failed first attempt: //www.city-data.com/forum/world...st-spoken.html

So, which language is the most common among non-native immigrants in your country? This excludes French Canadians, Swedish-Speaking Finns, First Nations, Native pre-Columbian Americans, Basque French/Spanish and many more. This is about recent immigrants not having a historical and traditional foothold in your country, or have the status of an traditional domestic minority language.

We have established that:

In Finland it's Russian
In Sweden it's Finnish
In Norway, Denmark and Iceland it's Polish
In France it's Arabic
In the Netherlands it's Arabic or Turkish
In Germany it's Turkish
In Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania it's Russian

And so on...

For Canada it's:

Punjabi (rising)
Chinese (unspecified, could be Mandarin, Cantonese or other)
Spanish (rising)
German (dropping)
Italian (dropping)
Cantonese (rising)
Arabic (rising)
Tagalog (rising)
Mandarin (rising)
Portuguese (dropping)

Ukrainian, which I mentioned in the other thread as at 175,000, is actually at 111,000 and way down the list.

It used to be a solid third behind English and French with 1 to 1.5 million speakers in Canada.

Turkish, in the case of Bulgaria...

But even then it's gamble to say as everyone living in the country speaks Bulgarian, including the Gypsies. In fact the only people who make zero efforts of learning the language even after living for years in the country are Americans and Britons. I've witnessed occasions where even French or Russian speak Bulgarian as unbelievable as this sounds...

These are the next most popular languages after English spoken by more than 1% Australia' s population.

Mandarin
Arabic
Italian
Cantonese
Greek
Vietnamese

Generally European language use is going down and the Asian ones up.

So, which language is the most common among non-native immigrants in your country?

Main language of Australia: English

Most common "immigrant languages" in Australia, top 10:

Mandarin (rising)
Italian (dropping)
Arabic (rising)
Cantonese (rising)
Greek (stagnant)
Vietnamese (rising)
Spanish (rising)
Hindi (rising)
Tagalog (rising)
German (rising)

indigenous languages in Australia are all dropping, none of them figure among the most spoken.
Being anglophone, most Australians don't bother in learning a foreign tongue.

For Nigeria the African numbers are impossible to know although most illegal crossings are from Niger to Nigeria and Niger isn't very dense and has less than 4 million people, but from outside Africa the largest language is Chinese. Their is an estimated 50,000 Chinese in Nigeria. I am guessing Chinese might also be the largest foreign language regardless of population due to the fact that most immigrants speak languages that originated in Nigeria, such as Hausa or Yoruba from Niger and Benin respectively.

Spanish? Really? It might be but I bet it is far behind most of the other ones mentioned. Hindi is probably up there too.
