Japan comes to mind with only around 15 million tourists per year, if it wasn't so expensive those numbers could easily double.

New Zealand is very isolated and I'm sure that keeps tourist numbers down. Most tourists there I would guess are adventure seekers, not the typical family or wealthy types.

For sure, they only got 3 million tourists per year, would be closer to 10 if it was located West of Australia in the Indian Ocean.

Japan isn't more expensive than Europe. Idk why people from Western countries don't go there that much, something like 75% of the tourists to Japan are either Chinese, Koreans, or Taiwanese. It's an excellent country to visit.

Liechtenstein. Super expensive, nothing to do, surrounded by two countries that are better suited for (winter) tourism.

Well i can't speak for entire Japan but Tokyo is the most expensive city i've visited in my life.
More expensive than Miami, NYC, London, The Randstad, The Ruhr, Frankfurt, Paris, Lyon, Tyrol and Singapore.

Tiny 3-star hotel room costed me $110 per night. It was within a 2 min. walk from one of the most famous nightlife districts of the city tho.

1 Corona in a non-strip club will cost you $6 to $7 in strip clubs you pay double.

I'd add to Japan politics and the people, at least from what have heard are not always friendly to foreigners.
I think Iran and most of the middle east have the same problem.

A lot of Eastern Europe gets overlooked by Americans, Asians, and other non-Europeans who would prefer to visit Western Europe. I mean if you only go to Europe once in your life will you choose France, England, Italy or Poland, Slovakia, Estonia.
