There are undesirable areas in those cities, of course. But as a tourist, you are not likely to go there.

It helps to practice making U turns when a person gets lost just in case.

Iran for Americans.

Isfahan looks interesting.

I've been to Buenos Aires and think that like in most Latin America, some caution usually is enough to keep safe.

Jordan is also safe, the government is stable and aside from border areas it's been affected little from war in neighbouring Syria. Cape Town should be safe as long as you keep away from the crime riddled townships. Istanbul has often been the target of terroristic attack but even here the likelihood of being hit are few
I thought Buenos Aires would be perfect vacation spot, but there is a lot of hyper inflation there (which leads to stress and people becoming poor). That can lead to acting out and increased "petty crime" such as armed robbery. Right??? Of course, the key is to try to fit in as much as possible and not to make yourself a target.

Jordan is indeed the safest place in the middle east aside from the given (i.e. Dubai) but the potential for terrorist activity seems to be increasing as in Turkey. Again, I'd love to visit but am afraid. I could be convinced otherwise though.

I won't be the first to admit this but New Orleans made me uncomfortable even in the touristy parts. We were followed and harassed a couple times. New Orleans is the only city I ever visited that I couldn't just relax and enjoy touring the city. Of course, practicing good judgement is always wise.

For Jordan, maybe wait for a while until the situation in that region improves.
Same for Istanbul, recently too many terrorist attacks there and in Ankara.
Not that you are running a great risk, but not the best time to visit either. It should improve some day.

I have been to Turkey and it is an amazing country. For right now I would only avoid central Istanbul and parts of Ankara also the Kurdish region but their are dozes of other amazing cities in Turkey outside of Istanbul and Ankara.

I really enjoyed the food in New Orleans. It was unlike anywhere else.

But I do agree that the French Quarter looked shabbier than I expected it to be, probably because of Katrina.

Places I want to visit but have safety concerns

1. Turkey
2. Morocco
3. Venezuela
4. New Orleans
5. Cities in Brazil not named Blumenau, Sao Paulo, Florianopolis, or Petropolis
6. Philadelphia, since I read that the scary parts are located quite close to the not scary parts and I love wandering around aimlessly taking pictures and soaking in the city, so it's a concern for me
7. Egypt
8. Cape Town
9. Jerusalem

Same goes for any city in any country of the so called developed world starting from cities such as Baltimore, Saint Louis, Detroit, Fresno (not that there would be anything interesting to see there), ecc.

I would add Northern Nigeria, particularly out of larger cities, El Salvador and Honduras (only the mainland) and not the island just off the coast. As for Papua, it seems to me that, aside from Port Moresby (with an astonishingly high crime and murder rate), it's safe enough to visit and i guess the same would for large swaths of DR Congo
fresno has yosemite which is a huge tourist spot. has china peak for snow activities is only an hour away! the bay area is 2 hours away if you want to drive over there. much better than baltimore, sat louis, detroit.
