In Western media, China and India are often mentioned in the same breath, how similar are they?

Not similar at all, in fact they are somewhat politically and socially polar opposites to each other.

However, they are part of the global economic sub-group known as BRIC, along with Brazil and Russia as the future predicted big 4 economies of the next couple decades...at least that was the prediction about 10 years ago. Since then, well, all these countries are developing economic slowdowns, particulary China and Brazil. India is so close to being the next China however, they are basically where China was about 20 years ago.

Perhaps it means India doesn't really care for sporting achievements to bolster their global presence or power? In any case China is badly underperforming this time round!

So you found one major difference, at least.

Tell us what it means to you? One country is focused on sports and athletic achievement and the other isn't. What's that have to do with all the hundreds of other complex socio-geographic-environmental-political-religious-economic elements that distinguish one country from another?
That's like saying "China eats with chop sticks, India doesn't, that's all we need to know"
