Since some people have named cities and towns, I would like to mention my appreciation for "Bois-le-Duc", the French name for s'-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.
The small archipelago in the Gulf of St. Lawrence called the ÃŽles-de-la-Madeleine (Magdalen Islands) has as its main town Cap-aux-Meules. In English it's called "Grindstone".
Rijsel = Lille but most Dutch still use Lille, i think because of the football club.
Poona = Pune.
About 25 years ago we tried to drove from our sister city Ronse in Belgium to Lille in France. We didn't had a road map, but we knew that we had to drive in the direction of Tournai / Doornik to get to Lille. Unfortunately the road towards Tournai / Doornik was blocked, so we decided to get to Lille via Kortrijk. We were sure to find a direction sign for Lille soon, but there was absolutely no direction sign for Lille, but constantly signs for a "one-horse town" called Rijsel, we never heard of. We were already quite desperate, until we saw a direction sign "Lille / Rijsel" Who can guess that Rijsel is the Dutch name for Lille?
About the word "tedesco" in particular, I have found that it derives from the medieval latin word "theodiscus", that was the name for the language spoken by the German people. Following, the meaning of the word was extended also to the people who spoke that language.
Corresponds exactly to Elevandiluurannik in Estonian.
