I can read.

Being a part of another country doesn't kill the culture if you don't actively try to destroy it. The US is a good example.

I haven't been, but I'd love to.

I would say Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Panama and Costa Rica are in another league than the rest of Central America.

Where my husband is from, you literally cross the street and you go from Brazil to Uruguay. Right away, you notice a cultural difference. Brazilians are very smiley, super nice. Uruguayans are more serious and reserved. It reminded me of when I cross from the US to Mexico.
