New York, Sao Paulo, or Shanghai: which one feels the biggest, the most intense, and the most overwhelming?
Pretty simple question really. Those with either experience or a general understanding of these three cities, please explain which of the three you think feels the biggest, the most intense, and the most overwhelming?
These are all global hypercities (metropolises exceeding 20 million people). All three are located in three different continents of the world, which makes the comparison between distinguished styles all the more interesting.
Sao Paulo is the one that have more buildings, viaducts and so. But it does not present a CBD like those in the two others.
So, in general, I think São Paulo is the one that seems bigger.
Shanghai easily feels more intense than NYC. The crowds are more everpresent, the crowds in the main subway stations are far greater, and nightlife runs later and a much wider gamut (the morning bustle also starts earlier).

It has three CBDs: Centro (downtown), Pinheiros and Santo Amaro.
Paulista Av, Berrini/Chucri Zaidan Av and Faria Lima Av. are its main CBDs, but you know what I mean.
São Paulo doesn't have impressive areas like Midtown or Pudong, but if you look the city as a whole, the sea of buildings seems bigger.

The law in São Paulo restricts the height of the buildings; therefore, places such as Pudong or buildings like Empire State cannot exist in SP.
São Paulo and NYC are not in America? Why different continents?
For me NYC is the same of to be in Sao Paulo but speaking English.
I think Shanghai is bigger and crowded. Asians cities are much more crowded and overpopulated.
São Paulo’s metro area there are more than 30 cities really independent in daily life so you don’t feel in a city of 21 million people but in a city of 10 million people like Buenos Aires for example.
Never been to Shanghai but based off pictures and what I know of China would give it to Shanghai overall...NY and SP would be a tie for second...NYC is more intense in the center but falls off in the outer reaches to a level that SP does not....NYC more intense but Sao Paulo feels bigger
