Eh, I seriously don't think the US will ever be considered a 3rd world country. Yes, we have major issues right now, but seriously... If things do get that bad, then I am afraid the rest of the world will have its own troubles as well. So many other economies are linked to ours.
We are in a recession, not a depression. Have a little faith.
Well if it means less mcmansions and a reduction in population (particularly the urban type) let's hurry it along.
The U.S. came through the Great Depression better than most other countries so even if it did happen I wouldn't be so quick to go to Europe or the likes. It looked pretty hopeless in the 30's in the U.S. but we came through it. Last time we had a depression they (rest of world, particularly Europe) did too and they started a world war. Someone who's prepared for such economic events doesn't feel the effects nearly so much as the unprepared. Interpret that however you want...
I agree those unprepared are always hurt more;but I think many were in areas that were going downward for a long time. They are as displaced as those when the country turned from a agriculural economy to a industrial one.
In spite of Bush's and Greenspan's efforts to turn the US into a third world country, the US standard of living is still extremely high. Regardless of how bad things get, we will all be dead before the US standard of living is not in the top 5 or top 10 countries in the world.
I have seen a few horizons from different continents. When Americans start to feel America is some hell hole, it would still be someone's paradise from the other side of the fence...
Tokyo, Japan. I'd go there now if I could; no need to wait for the US to become a third-world country. Of course, it's only a matter of time before that really does happen. Hopefully I'll be out by then.

Well if i had to leave, i'd grab my guitar and head to either
Bergen or Oslo, Norway
Helsinki, Finland
Stockholm, Sweden
Depending on which of these places i could get to, I'd hit up the Black metal or Death metal scene and start a band(Which i have been in Death metal bands in America, but its not as big as it is in that region of the world. However, we still produce some of the best metal bands in the world here in America! )
And if those didn't work out i'd try:
New Zealand
Australia
Japan
Italy
Taiwan
There's more, but i'll stop here for now
