GDP in $USD is all about "currency values". If China artificially manipulates its currency lower by 50%, then its GDP is understated by 50% (in $USD).
For GDP growth, one has to look at GDP by sector. Service sector growth is not real growth but just charging domestic-self inflated high fees like doctors. That's not growth. Overly simplified statements on GDP growth:
1). Agriculture sector -- this sector can not really grow.
2). Industrial sector -- this is real growth by making useful things.
3). Service sector -- fake, charging high fees.
Even if true this is lower than some Eastern European countries(Estonia, Slovenia), lower than Greece, Portugal and several times lower than many others. It's definitly low by all standards.
China has a lot of rural residents whose incomes are low. But they literally pay nothing for housing or even food.
Urban Chinese who have a stable job typically can afford a car and own an apartment, better than in many Eastern European countries.
China has an authoritarian government that makes it "easier". India is democratic.
edit: what TylerJax said.
Exactly!
It's a lot easier to build subways, roads, hydro plants, and other infrastructure when all you have to do is throw the residents out. China doesn't deal with these little issues of human rights, responsible government, and god knows any environmental laws. The government completely controls the media so they can also manage the message.
China is a totalitarian country where anyone can be locked up for any reason. India, despite her faults, is still a democracy where human rights are respected, government is accountable, and people have the right to protest.
