I used to live in Japan and every so often I'd see what my American friends and I would refer to as a "cucumber dog" on some door steps as I walked through town. I never asked anyone what it was but now I'm hoping that someone on this forum may know and explain it to me.

What the person would do is get a cucumber and a pair of chopsticks. They would break the chopsticks in half to make a total of four pieces. They would then stick these four pieces of chopsticks in the cucumber so it would stand up long ways looking like a little weenie dog. They'd then stick this out on their front door step. It seems this behavior would coincide with the time some Japanese would throw dried beans around their house. I know about the beans because I knew Japanese personally that would do that like once a year. I got the idea what the beans is about. But it's the cucumber dog that I don't understand and hope someone may be able to explain. I never had asked about that when I was in Japan, but now I'm curious to know.
