I've heard that Vladivostok is called the San Francisco of Russia,
I've been to Vladivostok, and I definitely felt the comparisons. The way the city is built, in particular.
But, the people couldn't be more different....Vladivostok has a lot of hardened sailor types....quick to lift up the Vodka bottle...
But the city of Vladivostok is quite pretty...and it has a very european architecture feel which is unique being so close to Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, etc.
Philadelphia is probably the closest one to it. Only difference is that Philadelphia is twice the size and not as beautiful in its surroundings.
In terms of culture etc the closest ones would be Wellington, Auckland, Toronto, Seattle, Melbourne. In the non-English speaking world Copenhagen, Berlin, Barcelona.

Wow wow wait a minute, Philadelphia, Copenhagen and Berlin has nothing in common with SF...Berlin might have the hippie vibe of SF but other than that the couldn't be more different.

Yeah I don't think you read what I wrote. I said Copenhagan and Berlin were somewhat similar in terms of culture (liberal, leftist, hippie culture).
Philadelphia is similar not so much in culture but the way the city looks.
Another city with religious feminists on LSD? Hope no matches in the world exist.
There may be lots of churches in SF but they are empty and are historic landmarks. I can't think of a less religious American city than San Francisco.
