"Definition of astrology
1
archaic : astronomy
2
: the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects
"

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/astrology

When I refer to astrology and its believers I mean people who, at least to some degree, order their life around its forecasts. Casually reading a horoscope "just because" will be considered outside this realm. Think people who would, for example, go to astrology-based meetings, assess potential relationships on supposed compatibilities, or feel confident enough to ask a stranger their sun sign.

I live in a smaller city in Ontario, Canada called Sudbury. As far as I can tell, it seems to be picking up steam in younger, artistically-oriented types of people. However, I also know of a number of university students (even within the sciences) who are genuinely faithful to it. I've also noticed that it seems to go hand-in-hand with people who are into alternative health lifestyles and display 'earthy' traits. None of that is probably surprising given the social stereotypes associated with astrology, but I am genuinely interested in why, at least in my community, there seems to be a sudden surge of interest lately.

Of course, there is no evidence to support any sort of direct relationship between the positioning of the stars and planets with the behaviour and fates of humans on Earth. I sort of feel like astrology is a surrogate for the waning respect for organized religion amongst Canadian youth. People for the most part probably desire some sort of reassurance or perception of guidance via higher power, and in the case of Western countries, maybe astrology is an easy answer to the faux pas associated with affiliating a specific religion. I'd imagine this probably applies moreso to Canadians whose families have existed here for several generations and are less apt to identify with foreign cultures. Especially Canadians whose lineage stems in Western Europe.

I really am not sure what to expect in terms of answers from other international users here. So, what is your perception of astrology's influence in your native area?

It is very popular here, many fortune tellers make tons of money by going on trashy TV shows to talk about astrology and face-reading or publishing their "2017 book of fortune" etc. Taiwanese people are just in general very superstitious (and laughably dumb). There are people who blame everything on the horoscope or the feng shui and whatnot. It goes like "you guys broke up because he's Pisces and you're Leo" or "you can't save money because the door of your house is facing your kitchen" or "her husband died because she has strong cheekbones, cheekbones = knives". A bunch of morons tbh.

Now I don't mind them as long as they remain lighthearted, and I believe that astrology could have some influence on the world (like the Age of Aquarius etc.), and I do believe that people of a certain sign do have a similar disposition in one way or another, but people here take it too far. No wonder this place is such a ****ing mess.

Astrology has no scientific basis in my country and therefore there is a high degree of healthy scepticism.

It is usually the confined to the back pages of tabloid newspapers such is it's lack of real credibility.

Astrology is used here mostly for humour. People use it a lot in memes for social networks. There are, of course, people with some degree of belief on it and in many other divinations - Cartomancy, Chiromancy and Numerology are particularly popular; but seldom to the point of basing all decisions of the life on what say the stars or the cards. The most skeptical people in Brazil are non-religious people, but also the followers of some gospel churches, as they look the divination as "devilish".

I'd say astrology is not too predominate here but alot of people will ask what your star sign is. I don't know how to put this but I'd say people that are not educated by the system tend to believe and talk about star signs. My family talks about ''star signs'' alot and I find it very interesting and I do believe it has some kind of credibility.

Now I'm off to do some research about astrology!
