OK. Well sharing the "world power" title with China is not really that much of a problem, we did it with USSR for 40 years and that was as an adversary. With China at least the relationship is much more civil.
The "trick up it's our sleeve" is up to the US people - do we want to stay competitive on the world stage or turtle up and assume the European model of a social democracy. Right now the political will is for the later, and that may spell the demise of our existence as a global world power.
Right now we have a much more advanced military, which is not to say we need use it, but it projects world power and it's used as leverage in global influence - trade agreements, partnerships, etc. We are active militarily (via bases, etc), politically, and economically everywhere globally. These three elements are all intertwined. And as many see that as a distraction and wasted resources, particularly with military bases and foreign aid, it's really the key to us being a prosperous world power as we are able to project global influence and clout to our benefit.
We also have a productive workforce, an advanced technology sector, stable economy, and stable government. Overregulation, entitlements, and partisan politics will damage these areas.
Keep all these elements in place, we will be OK.
